Men That Shape Their Eyebrows
One crazy thing that really surprised me in Japan is the amount of people that shape their brows. I attended a Japanese middle school for two years and 50% or more of my classmates had their eyebrows shaped, even the guys! Not only are they plucked, but they are usually shaped by the person himself. So I just couldn’t help but notice how uneven and badly shaped they were. Yes, there are some that get it right, but very few.

Koki Tanaka is a huge pop star in Japan. He looks great, but I think he’d look so much better if he didn’t shape those brows too much!
Eyebrows are an extremely crucial part of your whole face and if you mess up on them it really harms your whole look. My eyebrows aren’t shaped yet, but I wouldn’t dare touch them without going to a salon or having a specialist do them first. So I always question why my friends and many people around the world have such courage to shape their eyebrows themselves. Specialists can make a really great shape to your brows and afterwards it’s safe to pluck new hairs that might come in.
My advice: before you try doing something to you eyebrows, consult a professional!
And to the men: you guys look attractive with your natural brows, so don’t do anything crazy to them!

Women don’t look good with overplucked eyebrows and men look worse. Tanaka is cute, but his barely there eyebrows are a huge turn off.
I have to concur, men who shape their eye brows, unless they are drag queens, scare me…
I have just discovered your blog and it’s quite interesting.
Congratulations!
it is so obvious when a man plucks…it always looks off. you can take off the extra hairs if u have a unibrow…but shaping- ugh, hate that. it makes them look unmanly…great post!
Some manscaping is certainly appreciated, but when a guy is more groomed than me? Not cool.
I think the man eyebrow plucking thing only works on goths. I’m with you on this one, man brows are sexy as they are. Please, ppl with penises stay away from the tweezers!!
Taking off a few stray hairs is one thing, taking off most of your eyebrows is another! I occasionally tweeze, but that’s only because my eyebrows are entirely hidden by my fringe- I have naturally thick brows, I can’t imagine how much it must hurt for guys (who generally have hairier eyebrows than girls).
sure I love your blog! I’m linking you right now :)
Hee-hee, what really freaked me out in Japan were the girls who shaved off their eyebrows! Not an attractive look.
eeeeeww i hate men who do their eyebrows, i can understand trimming them cause some boys have rouge eyebrow hair that needs to be dealt with but when they start tweezing, eghhhhhh
Lol, funny topic~~ guys should just keep their eye brows natural-looking, as long as there’s no unibrow and they aren’t out of control.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Sure, I’d love to exchange links.
i’ve just added you, thanks :D
I try to keep mine in shape but i tend to just use an eyebrow pencil the one i have also has a blender at the bottom. When i was little i had bright blond hair and as i got older it changed innto light brown but my eyebrows never did!!!! so thats my main problem.
Ok I let Andy Rooney know that you support his style!
As long as they are groomed that is all us men should strive for.
Yeah I don’t even try to shape my own brows for fear of imperfection, so the guys should certainly leave thsi to the professionals–and not get too crazy!
I’ve know the horror of badly sculptured brows…why I was never told that one doesn’t save the eyebrow, I’ll never understand! I spent my teens with Chola eyebrows..funny in retrospect :)
I hadn’t my shape yet, I always feel lazy and horrified about it, because then, if I don’t like it? it must be so hard! but I agree, you must go to a salon, at least the first time!
I daren´t do it without a professional help!I´m not brave when my face is involved! ;)
Cool!
I’m not into fucken with tha eyebrows ;-(
In Italy too there’s tons of men with overplucked eyebrows, i can’t stand it cause they look like female and isn’t pleasant see that in a masculine face.
I’m not obsessed in eyebrows, i found a shape i like and i’m using from years, so far as i changed something.
I HATE when men shape their eyebrows! It looks freakish! It’s okay to tweeze a few hairs or take care of a unibrow but no shaping! Yuck!
OMG i love koki hahah regardless of his eyebrows, out of his whole boy-band (kat-tun), he`s the most masculine one <3
i like eyebrows who are totally natural very good! but i understand that girls want to fix them. however, boys should not do that! exept if they eyebrows looks like one eyebrow ;)
love your blog too. very informational ;) will link u up! oh, and I agree men SHOULDN’T pluck their eyebrows…maybe it’s because of all those final fantasy characters.lol
:D I used to do my boyfriend’s – only on the nosebridge between the brows though! He totally hated it, but looked cleaner afterwards.
I’ve never seen a non-unibrow man and thought that he needed a pluck. So I can’t see why a guy would want to shape his brows. For girls it can make a huge difference. I started doing my eyebrows when I was 17 and the result was remarkable, you can tell from photos that I looked much better (less ehm, bushy). But it is so easy to screw brows up, so professional help is always best.
I totally agree with you..they dont hv to !! they look ugly then.
ohh i agree with this topic. i’ve been wondering why japanese actors (especially the boys of johnny’s entertainment) pluck/shave their eyebrows. maybe they think it looks cool? it’s okay to shape eyebrows (well, i shape my eyebrows) but i think it’s not for the boys to do that thing :)
grooming and taking care of eyebrows is just like grooming and taking care of one’s hair. it is nothing feminine. shaping it is just like having a different style of haircut. you people shouldn’t judge other cultures just because you don’t understand them. i am assuming that most of you girls here as western people, so to you, most likely dressing gangster = masculine. but you are wrong.
hihihi is right!
gelai, Japanese actors/singers and also regular young Japanese guys shape their eyebrows because it is the current fashion. That’s all. Currently eyebrow shaping is in in Japan for both males and females. Back in the 80′s females didn’t shape their eyebrows either. Then eyebrow shaping started with females.
Probably then once they had cornered the female market, they decided to attack the male one.
Also about eyebrows, in medieval Europe, it was the fashion for everyone, women, men, children, to have shaven eyebrows, not shaped, shaven bald!
So aesthetics is subjective. People from the middle ages would think Western women of today with their full or plucked eyebrows look ugly.
I don’t understand, I’m the only one, it seems, that has feels the opposite.
I think it’s hot. I’ve actually never preferred a man with thick eyebrows rather than thinner ones (although I never discovered the eyebrow-shaping men until a few years ago).
Shaping/plucking your eyebrows doesn’t make a man less masculine, even if they are as thin as Kamenashi Kazuya’s (Tanaka Koki’s bandmate). In my opinion, it makes them look edgier, and I dunno but I’ve always had a thing for metrosexual or prettier men. Mind you, “prettier” doesn’t always mean “feminine”.
Although, I wouldn’t recommend extreme eyebrow shaping for Caucasian men. So far I’ve only seen Japanese, or the occasional Korean, Chinese or Indonesian, men pull off a fully-tamed eyebrow without looking homosexual. Probably because Caucasians in general tend to be born with thicker eyebrows that were already set to suit the complexion.
Hmmm I trimmed my bf eyebrows ’cause his are so thick. and I personally don’t mind doing it.
I don’t see why so many men and women have such an aversion to men grooming beyond shaving and bathing. I think if a man doesn’t over-pluck or wax excessively, a little is very attractive and neat. Just getting strays makes a guy look much better in my opinion. I’m not about a guy training his into very thin lines, though. I don’t even like that on a lot of women. I encourage you men to trim all over more. It’s not feminine… -_-
totally agree with that-over plucked brows for men look so gay!i don’t understand why?why do they have to do that?why?why?:(
Reading these comments I get the impression than the majority of the readers know very little about Japan and Japanese culture as shown by a noticeable degree of cultural jingoism in their writing. These readers seem to forget that different cultures and groups place particular value on different things, especially when it comes to personal grooming. In our society, for instance, many body builders shave their entire body, women shave their legs and armpits and nobody seems to think much of it. This is not the case world-wide or even USA-wide.
As far as Japanese is concerned, many — especially among men — have very “bushy” eyebrows that some do not find very attractive or stylish. This is especially true among the young. Granted, like many fads, some people go to extremes and their trimmed eyebrows do look overdone. Regardless, it’s their business what they do with their eyebrows, no?
My take on all of this is summarized in one of my favorite lines: “People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.” Better yet, “…live and let live…”
I totally agree with Hanno, the problem of Western culture is that they think they’re like gods, because they grow in a capitalist and over-shallow country where TV dictates what is the male and female pattern, they think they can cross culture and criticize others based on their superficial culture, where people are only as valuable as how good they can look and how much they got.
First, if there is no reason for men to pluck their eyebrows, so there is no for women to do it too. Women always fought for having the same right as men and now they want to have privileged rights.
Secondly, before saying anything, people should first study about culture, clothes, evolution and psychology, so they would be able to understand why they THINK they have the right answer for every single matter in this world.
Unfortunately, we live in world filled with dictators who can’t accept people being different from them. They have some kind of inner fear. People may argue, “I’m not dictating anything, I’m just giving my opinion”, Well, you’re not just your opinions, you’re ridiculing people on the streets by staring at them or laughing at them, making them so uncomfortable and humiliated that many individual hide they will and idiosyncrasies in order to satisfy society egoistic pattern.
Instead of picking on people for what they do with their own body, which I believe only God has the right to it, people should pick on those who are doing wrong to innocent people, resistless animals, children, underprivileged people and so on. Not on people doing harmless fashion to their body.
Finally, FOR GOD’S SAKE! Live And Let Live!
Men should do whatever they want to!
